Love, Wealth and Success

A woman went out of her home and saw three old men with a long white beard sitting on a wall near the entrance. She did not recognize them. She told them, “I do not think I know you, but I am sure your are hungry. If you please, you can come in and eat something.”

“Is your husband at home?” they asked. “No”, she told them. “He is out.

“Then we cannot come in “, they replied.

When her husband came back home in the evening, she told him what had happened. “Go tell them that I am here and invite them in,” he told her.

The woman went outside and invited them in. “We do not enter any home together,” they told her. “Why?” she wanted to know. One of those old men explained to her: “He is called Success,” he told her while he pointed at one of his friends, and continued saying while pointing at the other, “He is called wealth and I Love.” Then he added, “Now go inside and discuss with your husband whom of us you would like invited in.”

The woman went inside and told her husband what had been said. Her husband was in the clouds. “This is really good news!” he told her. “If that is the case, let us invite Wealth in. Let him come in and fill our home with wealth!”

His wife did not agree. “Darling, why don’t we invite in Success?” Their niece was overhearing from the other end of the home. She intervened with her own suggestion: “Would it not be better if we invited Love in? In that manner, our home will be full of love!”

“Let us heed our niece’s advice,” the husband told his wife. “Go and invite Love in as our guest.”

The woman went out and asked the three old men, “Who of you is Love? If you please, come in and be our guest.” Love stood up and began making his way in. The other two also stood up and followed him.

Bewildered, the woman asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited in Love, so why are you coming in too?” The old men replied together: “If you had invited Wealth or Success in, the other two would have remained outside, but since you invited Love in, wherever he goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there will also be Wealth and Success!”

This is another of those nice, idealistic fables we tell all the time about Love… “Beauty and the Beast” is another… they make us feel all warm and cuddly, but when you see the way the world really works, it becomes obvious that our notions of love set us up for huge disappointments most of the time. There is the old saying: “When poverty comes in the door, love flies out the window”… without the money to woo a girl properly, it isn’t easy to find a wife. All these young women who end up marrying older men – never seem to pick janitors or street-sweepers – it is always wealthy men they end up with. So what do we learn from this? That women (like in Beauty and the Beast) don’t care too much about looks, but they certainly care about the nice car, the fancy clothes, the wonderful trips and the beautiful home. After all, the Beast was wealthy, wasn’t he? And Cinderella… she got the Prince, but it was specifically because she was beautiful. How many rich men end up with Plain Janes?
And then there are those who are already married. Often top executives who suddenly lose their jobs suddenly lose their wives too. His success is what attracted the woman originally , but money is often what makes her stay. And if there was never much money – lack of it creates a lot of dissension. Yes, it is true that when there is love one often feels rich and successful – but for how long? Better to have had the success and wealth too. If you lose the love, at least you have the rest!
