agara’s going to Lesotho!

Yep! You’ve read correctly. After successful projects in Kenya, Calais, Lebanon and Romania, agara’s heading to South Africa, more specifically the Kingdom of Lesotho from the 3rd up to the 19th of August 2018. Lesotho (the ‘Mountain Kingdom’) is an enclaved territory within southern Africa, just like San Marino and the Vatican are enclaved within Italy. It is made up mostly of highlands where many of the villages can be reached only on horseback, by foot or light aircraft. Resources are scarce – a consequence of the harsh environment of the highland plateau and limited agricultural space in the lowlands.

agara will be teaming up with rise International (Relationships Inspiring Social Enterprise) which is a not-for-profit organisation registered in the US. The PoléPolé project involves a group of 8 agara volunteers travelling all the way to Lesotho, with the aim of tutoring a group of youths residing in the mentioned community using second-hand laptops. Tutoring will mainly focus on basic IT skills, and as such this will bring about the ultimate result from the project, that is the empowerment and transfer of knowledge on a voluntary basis.

Just like other PoléPolé projects, laptops collected by agara will be used to mentor youths in two community centres, namely God Love Centre and Paballong. These centres are used by youths in the community, and as such, having access to laptops will surely facilitate any basic IT school work these youths may have. Once agara’s volunteers terminate their expedition in Lesotho, the laptops will be donated to both community centres, thus ensuring that the second-hand laptops are given a new life. As a matter of fact, the second-hand laptops will be fully equipped with Office software, together with Internet access and potentially other softwares such as Photoshop, Touch Typing etc.

Another target of any PoléPolé project conducted by agara is that of creating a sustainable educational use of the second-hand laptops delivered. These laptops could then be used by the community of Lesotho so as to organise educational workshops.
